How Social Media affect our Mental Health
The gigantic population of our country uses social media platforms. The most used social media platforms are Instagram, Facebook, Youtube and Snapchat. Mental health is a state of mind which indicates the health of a person’s mind. It can be healthy or unhealthy depending on the surrounding. Social media plays a vital role in affecting the mental health of a person.
Social networking sites have a concrete impact on our life. Although social media connects us with our peers and pal. It also provides us social support which boosts our confidence and energy. But it also has some side effects, just like medicines we intake to feel better have. Social media is a huge platform that allows us to reach out and connect with others but apart from that, it can also make some people feel worse. Adolescents and young adults are the most sensitive part of our population who faces depression, anxiety and mental illness. Most of the studies indicate that time spent on social sites is correlated with depression and anxiety. The excessive use of social sites can disturb the sleeping patterns of a person. It can be seen that excessive use of social networking sites can hamper the mental health of a person.
Everything has its pros and cons just like social media has. The pros of social media are it is a big entertainment for us, it updates us to novel things coming to us, it increases our knowledge, educate us about upcoming trends and a lot more. Some of the cons of social networking are excessive use can hamper our mental health, it can disturb our sleep, leads to depression and make us couch potatoes etc.
Does social media influence us and affect us mentally? Generally what people see on social sites try to replicate can be the cause of the mental issues. Most people spend a lot of time surfing social sites which makes them isolated from other family members. Social isolation can have some negative health consequences it can hurt the cognition of a person which can result in depression or anxiety.
Social media is a huge platform where we can showcase our talent and influence many people out there but this influence is not the same for all. Some can learn from this and gain knowledge and some can see this in a distorted way and can be mentally disturbing. For example, a person who is not from a wealthy family sees a person on social sites who is from a wealthy family and compare himself with him or her and gets upset, ending up with serious mental issues.
Does social networking sites have side effects? The main obstacle with the population is that they see social networking sites as a full-time resource that help them to spend their leisure time but they are unaware of the hazardous mental health issues if we use them excessively. We should spend our spare time doing meditation, follow our hobbies, meet people physically than virtually on social platforms, doing walks, read books, minimize our time to surf on social sites etc. Apart from it, we can make a timetable to manage our time and do potential things. Social media certainly impacts many people daily. Instead of letting it consume your day and negatively affect your mental health. We should try to do meaningful tasks and engage ourselves in some effective work from which we can benefit.
